Mauritius plans to build a $2 billion oil refinery by the end of 2014 as the country diversifies its economy away from agriculture and tourism, Trade and Commerce Minister Shawkutally Soodhun said.
“This is an ambitious project,” he said by phone today from the capital, Port Louis. “If everything goes according to plan, it will be operational by the end of 2014.” Talks have been held with India’s Mangalore Refinery & Petrochemicals Ltd. about the project, in which the Mauritian government will be the majority shareholder, Soodhun said.
