India’s benchmark stock index dropped for the sixth day, its longest-losing streak in almost a year, amid concern rising prices may prompt policy makers to raise interest rates this month.
Tata Motors Ltd., the nation’s biggest truckmaker, fell to its lowest level since November. Higher prices will raise costs of Indian carmakers, Pawan Goenka, president of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, said today. Jaiprakash Associates Ltd., the largest builder of dams, slid for a sixth day to its lowest since May 2009. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called a meeting of ministers to discuss the pace of price increases, said Neelam Kapur, a government spokeswoman.
