Japan and South Korea agreed to deepen military ties as their defense ministers met for the first time in almost two years, and condemned North Korea for last year’s attacks that killed 50 South Koreans.

Japanese Defense Minister Toshimi Kitazawa and his South Korean counterpart Kim Kwan Jin agreed that North Korea’s aggression, including the November shelling of South Korean territory, was “unacceptable,” the South’s defense ministry said today on its website. They agreed to “expand and deepen military exchanges” after meeting in Seoul, the statement said.
