The United Nations is requesting as many as 2,000 additional peacekeepers for Ivory Coast to deter violence and protect the Abidjan headquarters of Alassane Ouattara, the internationally recognized winner of the Nov. 28 presidential election.

“We are asking for reinforcements,” Under Secretary-General Alain LeRoy said today after briefing the UN Security Council on the situation in the West Africa nation. “We need them tomorrow. When we will have them I don’t know.”
