Townsends Inc., a vertically integrated chicken producer, filed under Chapter 11 on Dec. 19 to obtain additional credit that the secured lenders would only advance with protection from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Delaware.

Family-owned Townsends, based in Georgetown, Delaware, has a capacity of producing 700 million pounds of poultry a year. Egg production is 1.3 million a week, while the company can generate 950,000 tons of feed annually, court papers say.
