The Shanghai government will compensate victims of a Nov. 15 high-rise fire that killed 58 people, a day after municipal authorities took responsibility for lax safety supervision that led to the blaze.

The city will pay 960,000 yuan ($144,500) for each person who died in the fire, said Zhang Renliang, head of Jingan ward, where the blaze occurred, at a press conference today. Survivors will receive “full compensation” for their destroyed property at market prices, he said.
