Bair Says Raising U.S. Capital Levels Will Boost Competitiveness

Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Chairman Sheila Bair said regulators “need to strengthen bank capital requirements” to improve U.S. lenders’ competitiveness with overseas firms.

“Capital is at the forefront of my list” of basic ground rules for regulation, Bair said today at a securities-industry conference in New York. “With the Basel accord, we need to move forward expeditiously on raising capital levels.”
