Chinese authorities began emergency preparations as Typhoon Megi, which left 11 people dead as it churned across the Philippines, neared China’s south coast.

Megi was about 600 kilometers (370 miles) south-southeast of Hong Kong at 2 p.m. local time and moving north-northwest at 9 kilometers per hour, the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center said today on its website. The storm is expected to make landfall about 270 kilometers east of Hong Kong by Oct. 23.
