European Central Bank Governing Council member Axel Weber said global regulators’ decision to more than double capital requirements for banks is a “major step” toward a more resilient financial system.

“We certainly are in a phase where the lessons learnt are being turned into political reality,” Weber said in a speech in Berlin today. “This is especially true for the reform of financial regulation. The envisaged reforms aim at creating a strong regulatory framework that ensures financial stability and supports steady and sustainable economic growth.”
