‘Powerful’ Hurricane Earl Puts East Coast on Alert

Emergency agencies along the Eastern Seaboard are preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Earl, which threatens to graze North Carolina and lash coastal Massachusetts with wind and rain before going ashore in Nova Scotia.

Hurricane and tropical storm watches were issued for the North Carolina coast, according to a National Hurricane Center advisory at about 5 p.m. Miami time. The hurricane watch extends from the Virginia border to Surf City, about 135 miles (217 kilometers) southeast of Raleigh.
