The Sinabung Volcano on Indonesia’s Sumatra island erupted this morning for the first time in 400 years, spewing ash and volcanic materials and prompting the evacuation of surrounding areas.
“The eruption reached a height of 1,500 meters (4,921 feet) and volcanic material set fire to the vegetation near the mountain’s top,” Surono, head at the Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, said by telephone today. “We have raised the alert status to the highest level.”
