Russia said grain crops were ruined over 27 percent of the planting area this year as the country suffered its worst drought in at least half a century.
Drought wiped out crops across at least 12 million hectares (30 million acres), a spokeswoman for the Agriculture Ministry said today by telephone, declining to be identified citing government policy. The ministry estimated on Aug. 23 that more than 11 million hectares had been affected.
