Vietnam’s trade deficit narrowed, boosting the government’s effort to shrink the shortfall that led to a currency devaluation last week.

The deficit was $900 million in August from a revised $978 million in July, according to preliminary figures from the General Statistics Office in Hanoi. For the eight months through August, the gap was $8.16 billion.
