S. Africa’s Cosatu Plans Strike to Back State Workers

The Congress of South African Trade Unions, the country’s largest labor union grouping, called on all of its affiliates to stage a one-day strike to pressure the government into meeting state workers’ wage demands.
Cosatu unions will notify employers on Aug. 26 of their intention to hold a secondary sympathy strike and will “shut down” the economy on Sept. 2, Zwelinzima Vavi, the federation’s general secretary, told reporters in Johannesburg today.
