Thirty-three workers trapped in an underground copper mine in northern Chile for 17 days are alive, Chile’s President Sebastian Pinera said.

“The whole of Chile is crying with joy and emotion,” Pinera said in televised remarks while holding up a letter from the miners retrieved through a 700-meter (2,300-foot) hole drilled from the surface. “This tells us they are alive, united and waiting to return to the sunlight and their families arms.”
