At least 39 people were killed in a suicide bombing outside an army recruiting station in central Baghdad, the Iraqi military said, in one of the city’s deadliest attacks in weeks. The Associated Press put the death toll at 61.
Another 57 people were wounded in the blast, which occurred early today when the bomber detonated an explosives vest in a crowd of recruits in the Baab al-Muatham area, the Baghdad Military Command said in a statement. The Iraqi Health Ministry said the death toll was expected to rise. The assault follows an attack in the city of Basra on Aug. 7 that left 60 people dead.
