Viktor Orban, as a student leader in 1989, urged Hungarians to fight for “political liberty” from the Soviet Union. Now, he’s calling for Hungary to reclaim “economic self-rule” from the International Monetary Fund.

Hungary’s premier is resisting IMF demands for more budget cuts after he won a landslide election victory by pledging to end five years of austerity. That has put him out of step with countries from the U.K. to Romania that are slashing spending after Greece’s ballooning debt undermined investor confidence.
