Congress voted in favor of expanding U.S. sanctions on Iran to punish foreign suppliers of gasoline and block banks doing business with the regime from the American financial system.

The House of Representatives voted 408-8 for the measure after the Senate’s earlier 99-0 tally in favor of the penalties, sending the legislation to President Barack Obama for signing. The administration has fought to retain more leeway for Obama in applying sanctions against companies from countries such as China that the U.S. relies on to help pressure Iran.
