Raspadskaya Mine Director Charged in Deaths of Miners

The director of OAO Raspadskaya’s flagship coal mine was charged with criminal negligence in explosions that claimed the lives of 90 miners, the Investigative Committee of the Prosecutor General’s Office said.

Twin blasts about 500 meters (1,640 feet) underground on May 8-9 disabled the mine, which produces about 11 percent of the coal used by Russian steelmakers. Rebuilding the mine, which employs about 4,000 people, may take a year and cost 5 billion rubles ($163 million), according to Kemerovo region Governor Aman Tuleyev.
