New York University Challenged on 40% Expansion Plan

Greenwich Village preservationists have a four-word response to New York University’s plan to expand its campus by 40 percent: Not in our backyard.

NYU, the largest private, nonprofit university in the U.S. by enrollment, has a history of battling community members, who are gearing up to oppose the growth and may delay it, said Andrew Berman, executive director of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation. At least five authorities must approve NYU’s expansion, which affect four areas: Manhattan’s Greenwich Village and East Side as well as Governors Island and Brooklyn.
