Stocks Finish Higher

U.S. stocks closed modestly higher Thursday as late-day bargain hunting lifted the market out of an earlier mixed performance.

News that U.S. July retail sales fell 0.1%, and a small rise in weekly jobless claims, kept buying activity in check, as the data rekindled investors' concerns about the health of the economy. The Federal Reserve said on Wednesday that the economy was "leveling out".
