United Rentals Inc., the largest U.S. construction equipment rental company, agreed to pay $14 million to settle regulatory claims it manipulated accounting to overstate earnings and meet targets.

The company didn't admit of deny wrongdoing in resolving the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's four-year investigation, according to settlement documents filed today at federal court in New Haven, Connecticut.
