Alberto Contador completed victory in the Giro d'Italia cycling race today, adding the sport's second-biggest prize to his Tour de France title last year.

The Spaniard overcame less than a week's preparation and a fractured elbow to finish the 2,128-mile (3,432-kilometer) race 1 minute 57 seconds ahead of Italy's Riccardo Ricco in the overall standings. The final stage, a time trial ending in Milan, was won by Italy's Marco Pinotti.
