Carlos Alberto Parreira, the Brazilian coach hired last year to prepare South Africa's soccer team to host the 2010 World Cup, quit to return home because his wife has fallen ill.

``My family needs me, especially my wife,'' Parreira, who will leave his post May 2, told reporters at a press conference next to Johannesburg's FNB Stadium, which will hold the World Cup final in less than 27 months. He will remain as a technical adviser to the team, he added.
