Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was acquitted on charges of false accounting at his holding company Fininvest SpA after his government voted to decriminalize the charges in 2002.

Milan Prosecutor Ilda Boccassini had asked the court to dismiss the trial for exceeding the statute of limitations, while Berlusconi's lawyers had requested he be exonerated. The charges stemmed from activity between 1986 and 1999.
