Federal Communications Commission member Michael Copps said the agency should scrutinize a growing trend of private-equity investment in companies such as Clear Channel Communications Inc. and Alltel Corp.

Regulating companies owned by hedge funds and other private ventures is more difficult than overseeing publicly traded companies, Copps said today at a meeting.
