The first thing I learned about Butterscotch, Hasbro's (HAS) 3-foot-tall, $300 animatronic pony, is that she tends to startle easily. Not the horse—the people around her.
I wanted to see whether this robotic plush pony, which wheels its head when you walk in the room, whinnies and snorts when it's touched, and sleeps and wakes with the changing light, would make a good gift for a child. Hasbro's target market is girls between the ages of 4 and 8. My first test subject was a bit older.
