Microsoft Misses Targets

Microsoft (MSFT ) posted 18 cents June-quarter earnings per share vs. 14 cents. Excluding charges related to a lawsuit settlement with AOL Time Warner, Microsoft said it earned 23 cents earnings per share, missing analysts' average estimate by a penny. Still, revenue rose 11%, to $8.07 billion, led by stronger sales of Windows Server 2003 software.

Caterpillar (CAT ) posted $1.15 vs. 58 cents second-quarter earnings per share on a 12% revenue rise, a favorable currency impact, higher machinery, and engine volume. Caterpillar sees $2.75-$2.90 2003 earnings per share on about a 10% revenue rise.
