Nick Hayek Jr. used to be a film director, coaching actors such as Peter Fonda. A decade later, he's rehearsing for the role of chief executive officer at Swatch Group AG, the world's biggest watchmaker.

The 47-year-old, who dropped out of business school to study movie making, started preparing two years ago to succeed his father, Swatch founder Nicholas Hayek Sr. After leaving the film industry in 1994, he now oversees 70 percent of the business and is slated to replace his 74-year-old father as CEO on Jan. 1.
