After a boardroom coup pushed Carlo De Benedetti out of Olivetti in September 1996, he was left running a collection of companies involved in car parts, machinery, and publishing.

When he popped up, it was either as the author of op-ed pieces or as the quarry of paparazzi, caught with his second wife -- a former film actress -- on his yacht in the Caribbean.
