YO, BILL! WHERE'S MY $1,000? That's what hundreds of irate cybernauts have demanded of Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates after apparently getting E-mail from him. The bogus missive offers the cash--or a free copy of Windows 98--if recipients forward his message to 1,000 people and test some new software.

The chain letter, one of a string of pranks at the software giant's expense, bears a Microsoft return address, fooling some people into thinking it's real. The company says the hoax has hit college campuses and, if the past is any guide, should soon appear in corporate offices.
