Stephen F. Bollenbach likes speed, whether it's racing around Los Angeles in his convertible or remaking companies. Now, the 55-year-old chief executive officer of Hilton Hotels Corp. is slowing down after his unsuccessful 10-month pursuit of ITT Corp.

Analysts hoping that Bollenbach will be back wheeling and dealing in 1998 may be disappointed. "I know people expect me to do big deals," he says. "But it's not necessary." Bollenbach figures Hilton can grow 20% a year without a major acquisition. But in December, Hilton announced that 1997 profits will be 9% lower than expected.
