Lately it feels like we can barely make it a week without getting some new grist for speculation about Kroger Co.'s next big move.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the grocery giant made an offer for Boxed, the fast-growing startup that sells goods in bulk. Then came a report that it might be interested in striking some sort of deal with Overstock.com. There's also talk of the grocer joining forces with Ace Hardware for a "store-within-a-store" concept and partnering with Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.
