Coxe graduated from Dartmouth College in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and earned an MBA in 1984 from Harvard University's Graduate School of Business.
He started his career as a corporate financial analyst with Lehman Brothers. He later moved back to his hometown of Atlanta where he was a director of marketing at Digital Communications Associates.
Coxe joined Sutter Hill Ventures in 1987. He specialized on investments in information technology and was managing director from 1989 to 2020. Sutter Hill invested in Nvidia in 1993 and Coxe has been on the board of directors since then.
His wife, Simone Otus Coxe, is the co-founder and director of CALmatters, a non-partisan nonprofit newsroom focused on California government.
