The majority of Mehta's fortune is derived from his half stake in Torrent Group, a conglomerate in India. The group has three main divisions: Torrent Pharmaceuticals, Torrent Power and Torrent Gas.

Torrent Pharmaceuticals is a producer of cardiovascular, nervous system and diabetology medicines. He owns about 34% of the company, according to an December 2025 filing. Mehta holds the shares directly and through Torrent Investments, a holding vehicle in which the family's of Samir and Sudhir own 50% each, according to a January 2024 filing. Shares held by his wife and two sons are attributed to him in the calculation to reflect his status as chairman.

He also owns a 25% stake in Torrent Power, the group's energy generation unit, directly and through Torrent Investments, according to an December 2025 filing.

Mehta owns 50% of the closely-held Torrent Gas, which reported revenue of 44.3 billion Indian rupee ($467 million) in the year to March 2025, according to its financial statement. The company is valued using reported financial results and the average enterprise value-to-Ebit and enterprise value-to-sales multiples of four publicly traded peers: Gujarat Gas Ltd, Mahanagar Gas Ltd, Indraprastha Gas Ltd and GAIL India Ltd.

The value of his cash investments is based on an analysis of dividends, insider transactions, taxes and market performance.

Nikhil Joshi, a spokesperson for the company, responded to requests for comment on Mehta's networth which included an equity valuation for Torrent Gas Pvt Ltd at $1.84 billion.

Biography

Mehta was born in 1963 to Uttambhai Nathalal "U.N." Mehta, who was a representative for a Swiss pharmaceutical company. U.N. Mehta founded Trinity Laboratories, the predecessor of Torrent Pharmaceuticals, in the early 1970s.

The family business started venturing into the power supply sector when the Indian central government allowed private participation in 1991.

Mehta joined the family business in 1986. He led Torrent Group's diversification to the gas supply sector.

In 2014, Mehta succeeded his elder brother Sudhir as Torrent Group's chairman.
