Dommermuth was born in Montabaur, Germany, in 1963. He dropped out of high school before enrolling in an apprenticeship at Deutsche Bank. He started his first company at age 24, developing marketing concepts for small software companies. Using the brand United Internet, Dommermuth expanded and within a decade had become one of Europe's first Internet providers. The business sold shares on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in 1998.

After the Internet bubble of 2000, the billionaire focused his company on web hosting and storage, e-mail services, developing mobile applications, providing marketing solutions for online advertisers and broadband Internet. United operates Internet brands 1 and 1, GMX and Web.de.

Dommermuth is married to model Judith Berger and has a son from a previous marriage.
