Carl Bennet was born in 1951 in a family with roots in Swedish nobility. He studied economics at the University of Gothenburg. He spent most of the 1980s as an executive at household appliance company Electrolux AB. During that time he also invested in a maker of polymer solutions, which was run by his former colleague Rune Andersson.
In 1989, the men teamed up to acquire a struggling medical-supplies subsidiary of Electrolux, called Getinge. The company went public in 1993 and used some of the proceeds to acquire other businesses. Bennet split with Andersson in 1997 and became lone controlling shareholder in Getinge and dental-equipment maker Lifco AB, which has evolved into a conglomerate of small and medium-sized entities. He also acquired a controlling stake in printing company Elanders AB, and founded Arjo AB, which focuses on physical movement of medical patients.
In the decades since, Bennet has run the portfolio companies through his wholly-owned investment firm, called Carl Bennet AB. He holds a controlling stake in all of them.
Bennet said in 2024 that his focus is on maintaining control over the firms to let them operate with a long-term strategy. "Otherwise I can tell you that most of the companies wouldn't be around, and especially not here in Sweden," he said. "So it's important to keep control of these stakes, to develop the companies."
Asked in 2022 about his net worth, Bennet told Swedish Television: "That fortunes have grown for the wealthiest, that's okay as long as you have a strong welfare state."
He lives in Gothenburg, Sweden.
