The so-called loneliness epidemic has been plaguing the world since long before Covid. Are AI chatbots a potential solution? Experts appear to be stumped on how to spur human connection. But if the investments of companies like Google and OpenAI are any indication, your next best friend might just be online. No matter your age or stage of life, there's probably a digital confidant out there for you. Over the last several months, Bloomberg Opinion columnist and author of the FT business book of the year, “Supremacy: AI, ChatGPT and the Race That Will Change the World” Parmy Olson  tried several of these AI companions. She even let her kids play with Grok, a toy that uses OpenAI's technology (and has no relation to Elon Musk's X chatbot, even though it's voiced by Grimes). She found some upsides — but also some concerning problems.

Olson joins Bloomberg Opinion Managing Editor Nicole Torres for a live Q&A Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 11:00 a.m. EST/4:00 p.m. GMT. A recording of this conversation will be made available to listen and share. Bloomberg digital subscribers and Terminal clients have exclusive access to sign in and ask our team questions during the live broadcast.
