Maui Fire: How ‘Risk Blindness’ Made It Worse

The Hawaii wildfire that took more than 100 lives and razed the town of Lahaina wasn’t inevitable. Just as with earlier fires in California and Colorado, the conflagration was spawned by a combination of natural and human-made factors. As climate change heightens the risk of extreme weather events that endanger lives and livelihoods, a common factor in many of these disasters is emerging: risk blindness.
