  • 00:00Olivia we know that more than twenty two million Americans have lost their jobs. But what does this mean for foreign born workers. Especially as President Trump has halted immigration . Yeah that's right. Emily we know that millions of Americans have lost their jobs but a large portion of that includes foreign workers who are effectively in limbo right now. Many of these foreign workers have also been laid off or forced to take a leave of absence from their work due to the Corona virus. In one of the problems for them particularly those on the H1 B visa which is a temporary visa for people who have specialized skills that they can actually only stay in the US for 60 days without being paid. This means that time is running out for hundreds of thousands of people who are on their temporary visa status and watching the days tick by and don't really have any other options right now . Meantime let's take for example a company like Google which has said it's going to slow hiring through the end of the year but also employees a lot of people who have H1 B visas. When faced with a choice does that mean some of these companies might consider it more expedient to focus on cutting foreign workers or what are their options. If they want to keep these workers . Yeah there are a lot of questions at the moment around how this is going to be impacted long term as we see hundreds of thousands of these H1 B workers leave the country. What kind of an impact is it going to have on the economy. I talked to a lot of experts who said particularly immigration lawyers actually who were saying that they are fielding scores of calls from businesses that are really confused about what to do right now . We know that around three quarters of H1 B workers in the U.S. are are in the technology industry. So this is overwhelmingly impacting those big companies. And one of the biggest problems for these companies as they try and like wade through the right decision here is do you low a US worker and keep an H1 B worker on on the payroll because you're going to jeopardize the legal right to stay in the country if you don't pay them or do just simply lay off all of the foreign workers and keep U.S. workers on staff because it's the easier option. And if either of them if they make either decision they expose themselves to potential discrimination. So down the line. So a lot of unanswered questions right now about how this is going to impact companies as we move forward .

About 200-thousand foreign-born workers who are on the H-1B visa could lose their status by June. This means big tech companies in the U-S may have to let go thousands of their employees in the midst of the pandemic. Bloomberg's Olivia Carville reports on "Bloomberg Technology."
