Brits Protest Boris Johnson’s ‘Attack on Democracy’

Thousands are taking to the streets after the prime minister announced plans to suspend Parliament.

Thousands of people joined protests across the U.K. against Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s dramatic decision to suspend Parliament —a move that will hamstring efforts by no deal Brexit opponents. From London to Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast, about 60 protests against prorogation are planned on Saturday, according to data gathered by Tech For U.K.

The coalition of protesters, using the slogan “Stop the Coup”, argue Boris Johnson is undermining centuries of democracy in Britain by limiting debate. No deal Brexit opponents, such as former Chancellor Philip Hammond have called the move a “constitutional outrage”. But Johnson says the move is unrelated to Brexit and is instead needed to refresh the legislative program.
