How Gasoline Shortages Rippled Across the U.S. Southeast

The massive U.S. gasoline pipeline shuttered by a cyberattack began returning to service Wednesday, but fuel shortages across the U.S. southeast could persist for days.

About 70% of gas stations in some states had no fuel as of Wednesday, according to data from GasBuddy. The five-day outage of the country’s largest gasoline pipeline, operated by Colonial Pipeline Co., forced President Joe Biden to ask customers not to hoard fuel. Though gasoline is flowing again, trucks still need to deliver fuel to stations across the southeast. Hardest hit states, including Georgia and North Carolina, could get relief as soon as this weekend.
