Consolidation Efforts Transform the Pharmaceutical Industry
A proposed Pfizer-AstraZeneca megamerger is among a wave of consolidation efforts that have recently been transforming the face of the pharmaceutical industry. Last month alone, about $118 billion in health-care deals were announced or proposed, nearing the $174 billion spent on deals all of last year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. While in 1988 there were 42 members of the Pharmaceutical Resesarch and Manufacturers of America, the industry lobbying group, only 11 of the original members now remain.
