Colorado Oil Boom Accelerates on Horizontal Drilling
As of Aug. 7, state regulators have approved 1,201 permits to drill horizontal wells in Colorado. Companies are turning to this technique, in which a well is sunk and then angled horizontally through a formation. The 2013 total has already surpassed the record 1,190 permits to drill horizontal wells in 2012, when the state's oil production was its highest in 55 years. Colorado is the nation's fifth-largest producer of natural gas and ninth-biggest oil producer.
