The presidential race in Georgia, where 16 electoral votes are at stake, has been rated a “toss up” by the Cook Political Report. Republicans have won every presidential contest in the state since 1996, and Donald Trump won it by 5 percentage points in 2016. It could take a while to know the winner in close races: The state doesn’t start counting mail-in ballots until 7 a.m. on Election Day, and many competitive races in Georgia’s 2020 primaries weren’t called for days.
Georgia has two toss-up Senate races this year—the regularly scheduled contest between incumbent Republican David Perdue and Democrat Jon Ossoff and a special election to fill the seat of Johnny Isakson, who resigned at the end of 2019. If no candidate gets at least 50% of the vote, the top two candidates in each race will advance to a runoff election to be held on Jan. 5.
