Bloomberg’s research arm, Bloomberg Intelligence (BI), provides in-depth analysis and data sets on industries, companies and credit, government, economic and litigation factors that impact decision-making. We sat down with analyst Geetha Ranganathan to discuss her role and responsibilities on the BI team.

What is your role on the Bloomberg Business Intelligence (BI) team, and what does the position entail?
I am a senior analyst for the media sector at BI covering the Advertising and Marketing, Cable & Satellite, Diversified Entertainment and, the Publishing & Broadcasting industries. My position requires me to provide insights at an industry level and on key companies by combining Bloomberg’s comprehensive datasets with analysis on key fundamentals and thematic trends.

What academic or professional experience prepared you for your current position?
I have a Masters degree in Economics and Finance from NYU and am also a CFA charterholder.

What kind of research have you been doing since the beginning of the year?
The media industry is at a crossroads as users consume a lot of their content digitally, especially on their mobile devices. While the industry has been grappling with cord-cutting amid the rise of new streaming services, the dominant theme since the start of this year has been likely deregulation with a new administration.

What are some of the most surprising trends you are seeing in the media world?
Video-on-demand is dominating the Media industry. This is forcing distributors to come up with innovative ways to bundle and disseminate content, thereby creating new revenue models. It has also meant the creation of new opportunities to push the envelope on content creation.

How might clients use BI research?
Clients can use BI to create and identify investment ideas. They can also identify critical trends for macro, industry and company-specific data to make better investment decision. BI also makes it easy to get up to speed on a new industry or company using primers, data, dashboards and thematic analysis.
