Collaboration, creativity, and change: longtime Bloomberg employees reflect on their careers

March 19, 2019

At Bloomberg, our people are our greatest asset, and creating an environment where employees can grow and develop is paramount to our success. For 19,000 employees in 175 offices worldwide, our culture encourages career mobility, allowing people to grow and succeed in their own way over time.

So perhaps it’s no surprise that many Bloomberg employees have been with the company for ten, twenty, even thirty years – and have the diverse and rewarding job histories to show for it. Different locations, departments, and opportunities all allow employees with the drive and focus to apply their talents to multiple areas of the business.

Here, six longtime Bloomberg employees discuss their career paths, favorite moments at the company, and what sets our culture apart.

Ilene Friscia Bloomberg LP Engineering New York

The New York office is, at first glance, organized chaos. Especially in the pantry. I think it hasn’t changed in 30 years; it’s only intensified. We move quickly. We exchange diverse ideas often and we support each other. Most of all, we have a culture of collaboration. I marvel that we can have passionate and loud debates on the right way to get to the same end goal one day, and the next week might be sharing a beer after work to celebrate a success. There’s a lot of passion and a lot of smart people around me. That’s my favorite part of the New York office.

On my first client visit, I got the opportunity to see exactly how the data that I was analyzing and entering into the system was benefiting our users. For a data person, it’s very gratifying to see first-hand where the data is going, and how it’s being used. I’ve also loved being involved with the different teams outside of Global Data; helping Sales, Media, and Bloomberg TV.

Over time,  I’ve built a strong bond with my fellow team members by teaching and talking about my experiences with new employees, many of them with different backgrounds and skill sets. It’s amazing to witness the evolution of diversity within Bloomberg.

Lars Klemming Bloomberg News Singapore

I’ve been lucky enough to have lots of opportunities to change and develop my career here, taking me to different places and working with lots of interesting people.

After being the Nordic Bureau Chief and running the European tech, media and telecom team for Bloomberg News, I moved to Singapore as Bureau Chief in 2009. Two years ago, I’d been working as Southeast Asia managing editor for three and a half years, overseeing news coverage across 6 countries with more than 100 journalists when I got a call asking if I would help create a morning news service called Daybreak.

I fell for the idea of being part of a startup within the wider Bloomberg News world. So I built the Asian team from scratch as we created this mobile product. Daybreak is now published six times a day and is a well-established news source among our clients.

Kate Monyo Bloomberg LP Sales London

To thrive at Bloomberg, you need to communicate with as many departments as possible. Moving around and taking on roles for departments you aren’t familiar with can challenge you and ultimately lead to career growth.

Mamiko Ohno Bloomberg LP Analytics Tokyo

I started as the only EMS (Execution Management Systems) trade desk representative in Japan and have built my career around electronic trading and order management systems. I can’t thank Bloomberg employees in other locations enough for helping me be able to overcome the difficulty of working alone out of Tokyo when I first joined. At the end of the day, I still feel the entrepreneurial spirit remains while teams continue to grow.

Andrea Pastre Bloomberg LP Events Sao Paolo

I love that São Paulo is our headquarters for South America. We interact with employees from other regions who have different cultures and languages, which helps us constantly learn more.

The office here reflects Bloomberg’s culture and attracts many clients to visit our space, which gives us more opportunities for relationships. Though we have more than 300 employees, we still get to know almost everyone.
