Sony Bank to differentiate its business by adopting Bloomberg’s value-added data and cutting-edge delivery technology for fully cloud-based computing

January 20, 2022

Will make leaps and bounds in optimizing IT costs and improving the flexibility and agility of its global trading and risk management operations

Tokyo – Bloomberg is pleased to announce that Sony Bank has adopted cloud-native delivery of its real-time market data feed, B-PIPE, Data License technology, and other value-added data solutions for the bank’s next-generation markets system to be established within Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The data solutions adopted include real-time data feed B-PIPE, BVAL, which provides reliable and transparent market value pricing data for a wide range of financial products, and Data License, which provides a range of cloud-native data including reference data, prices, regulatory data, research, corporate actions, and alternative data for 50 million different securities and 30 thousand fields. As a result, Sony Bank will be able to realize a fully cloud-based trading and risk management operations platform.

Sony Bank is an online bank that provides financial products and services to individual customers, as well as an early pioneer of cloud services, having first launched its cloud services in 2013. In order to establish a business foundation that supports growth, Sony Bank is making efforts to shift all of its operations to the cloud, pending a system renewal.

By using the technical advantages provided by B-PIPE and Data License technology and employing the high-quality data provided by BVAL and Data License products in its risk management operations, Sony Bank will be able to achieve seamless operations across its banking services and within its cloud-based environment. Bloomberg’s high-quality data, which can be distributed to a client’s cloud-based system, will be integrated into Sony Bank’s AWS platform, enabling more advanced trading and risk management operations. Bloomberg’s continued relationship with Amazon Web Services supports the facilitation of access to data for our clients and allows for them to more easily drive business insights.

Sachio Hayashi, Executive Officer of Sony Bank and head of its Accounting Department and Risk Management Department said, “we believe this service brings both operational and systemic benefits. In terms of operations, it provides traders with the same data that is used by the middle office for market valuation, enabling them to grasp a company’s “official valuation”—an evaluation based on financial and managerial accounting—in close to real time. From a systems perspective, we have been connecting multiple external applications to our in-house systems, but we now intend to simplify this set up, which we expect will reduce system update and maintenance costs.”

“We are very pleased to be able to provide Sony Bank with a competitive advantage through the integration of our innovative data distribution services and abundant data,” said Norman Tweeboom, Bloomberg’s Japan Regional Head. “With over a third of our worldwide employees in engineering roles, Bloomberg is an industry pioneer in the development of cutting-edge, cloud-native solutions and the widening of the boundaries of innovation.”

BPIPE is Bloomberg’s real-time Market Data Feed which offers consolidated access to 35 million instruments across all asset classes — as well as to Bloomberg composite tickers, market indices, streaming delayed data and key reference data to describe these instruments, e.g., the Financial Instrument Global Identifier (FIGI).

BVAL is Bloomberg’s Evaluated Pricing service and supplies independent and transparent evaluated pricing daily for over 2.5 million securities across all asset classes, including thinly-traded and hard-to-price fixed income securities.

Bloomberg’s Platform for Data Distribution provides delivery of Bloomberg’s comprehensive Data License content with the same trusted infrastructure used to distribute B-PIPE, providing clients with a single access point for all the data required to run their business.
