Liberty Mutual Insurance Company Reports Earnings Results for the Second Quarter Ended June 30, 2015
Aug 12 15
Liberty Mutual Insurance Company reported earnings results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2015. For the quarter, the company reported net written premium growth excluding Venezuela and normalizing for changes in FX is just under 5%. But the primary growth drivers were stable and are improving retention levels across most of business segments. pretax operating income, including LP and LLC income, was down 69% to $171 million in the quarter. The three main drivers of the decline in order of negative magnitude was: the timing and impact of hyperinflation and devaluation accounting in Venezuela over the past 18 months, which cost $144 million quarter-over-quarter; quarterly catastrophe losses of $800 million that were $125 million higher than last year; the decline in LP and LLC income predominantly driven by lower valuations in the energy sector, something around $66 million. PTOI or pretax operating income of $66 million was down $74 million compared to second quarter of 2014, with the increase in Personal Insurance and catastrophe losses of $81 million accounting for more than the shortfall.
