Jan. 31 (Bloomberg) –- USPS Lunar New Year Stamp Artist Kam Mak discusses what went into creating the design for the Lunar New Year stamps for the U.S. Postal Service. He speaks to Pimm Fox on Bloomberg Television’s “Taking Stock.” (Source: Bloomberg)

I would like people to learn a little bit about you, you arrived in the united states when you were 10 years old?

At his right to -- that is right, 1971, i emigrated with my family.

The first thing that i saw was the world trade center, driving down the brooklyn creek expressway.

That image building -- fields lls you.

Did you ever think you would be designing the stamps that would be used in the imagery all over the world?

Not at all.

I'm still thinking, is this a dream?

What a dream job this is, that the united postal service has given me and you knock -- a unique opportunity to showcase my art and my culture to the world.

Why you?

To this day, i do not know.

Someone, a talented designer, called me -- i was working on the koi, and in the process of that project, they asked me by the way, they are wanting to do a second series of the lunar new year's day up.

-- stamp.

And they wanted me to come up with a concept, and that is how it got started.

Were any designs rejected?

I followed the tradition, using the animal from the chinese zodiac, and the first step was the year of the rat -- stamp was the year of the rat, and i thought something was missing from that concept.

And so i came up with an idea with the encouragement of the art director, that i wanted to use the traditional element of the lunar unit ==-- new year, to tell a much more enriching story of the story.

That is why i used the traditional lantern.

And for the year of the horse, i used the drum.

They are the iconic instrument that usher in the new year.

When i hear the drums playing, it lifts up my spirits.

It is a great start.

Doesn't sound like the homes of the -- does it sound like the homes of the horse -- hooves of the horse?

Yes, and also in gives -- it gives you either new g and determination -- it gives you energy and determination.

Speaking of, what is next for you?

Everyone will have to wait till next year to see what the next traditional element for the stamp will be, as i have been signed on with the u.s. postal service again.

You will have to let us know when that happens, we would love to talk to you.

Thank you.
